Vincent Chin, a Chinese engineering student in Michigan, was beaten to death with a baseball bat by two unemployed workers who mistook him for Japanese. Chinese-American activists organized to protest the light sentences the criminals received. Lee has never said he felt explicit racism, and indeed most Americans by the late 1970s had stopped using slurs to refer to Asians, but he was aware of being different in a strange land. Leaving one culture to live in a completely new one is never easy. It is almost always a shock.

SURVIVING AND USING SIX YEARS OF REJECTION The months of not getting a script bought or a movie idea produced turned into years. Lee did not improve as a “pitcher” of his projects. When trying to sell himself and his ideas or scripts to film executives, Lee tended either to try to act out parts or not say much. When he did talk, he often did not get to the point right away, which Hollywood executives are famous for insisting on. His three-minute pitches would stretch into a 49 50 ang lee half-hour.
